Vanessa Morrissette’s journey with the Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological, and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) in DuPage, IL, began as a high school student at Christian Fenger Academy High School in Chicago. As a participant in ACT-SO, a year-round enrichment program, Vanessa experienced firsthand the transformative power of mentorship and community support.

ACT-SO encourages students to pursue their academic interests and provides a platform for them to showcase their talents in various disciplines, including STEM, humanities, and performing arts. Students select a subject, work closely with a mentor to develop their projects, and present their work to a panel of judges. This journey not only builds students’ confidence but also equips them with essential skills for their future endeavors.

Inspired by the encouragement she received during her high school years, Vanessa was committed to give back to the program that helped shape her future. Today, as a manager at ComEd’s Oakbrook Terrace office, Vanessa is not only fulfilling that promise but also making a lasting impact on the lives of countless young people in DuPage County, IL.

Vanessa is among three Exelon Foundation Employee Volunteer Award (EVA) recipients this year, alongside Shane McCoy and Daryl Richardson—whose inspiring stories can be found in ComEd’s Powering Lives Network— highlight the diversity and impact of ComEd’s volunteer efforts. Now in its 19th year, the EVA program recognizes and honors employees who dedicate their time and efforts to making a positive impact in their communities through volunteerism – sponsored by Exelon, ComEd’s parent company.

Vanessa’s involvement with ACT-SO spans over seven years, during which she has played a crucial role in the organization’s operations. Her background in electrical engineering has enabled her to contribute effectively to ACT-SO’s technology initiatives, from updating the website to designing promotional materials. Vanessa also manages the internal workings of the organization, collaborating with banquet coordinators and administrators to ensure seamless operations. Her efforts have been instrumental in providing students with the resources and support they need to succeed.

For Vanessa, ACT-SO is more than just a volunteer opportunity; it’s a family tradition. Her involvement with the program led her to meet her husband, and both of her children have also participated in ACT-SO’s enriching programs. “I wanted my kids to have the same opportunities I had, to grow and learn in a supportive environment,” said Vanessa.

Vanessa finds immense joy in watching students grow from timid beginners to confident competitors, ready to showcase their talents. Her dedication has been instrumental in ACT-SO’s continued success.

“Vanessa’s impact on ACT-SO has been truly remarkable,” said Dr. Leslie Ford, Chair of the DuPage County ACT-SO. “Her technical skills, dedication, and passion for empowering young people have significantly enhanced our program. As an ACT-SO alum, Vanessa’s contributions go beyond just volunteering; she helps shape the future of our students by providing them with the tools and support they need to succeed. We are incredibly grateful for her commitment and the positive influence she brings to our organization.”

This year, Vanessa accompanied students to the national competition in Las Vegas, where they earned several medals in their respective categories. “It’s really a growth process for them,” Vanessa shared. “Whether you medal or not, you are growing throughout the year.” The experience of competing on a national stage is invaluable for students, providing them with exposure, confidence, and the motivation to pursue their dreams.

The organization hosts various events throughout the year, including competitions, banquets, and workshops, where students showcase their projects and receive guidance from experienced mentors. Companies like Apple have also supported ACT-SO by providing resources like iPads for students, highlighting the collaborative effort to support youth development.
