After working with ComEd engineers for two weeks to transform recycled refrigerators into solar-enhanced racecars, 30 young women strapped on their helmets and put their pedals to the metal at the ComEd Icebox Derby.
The six teams – Orange Flare, Violet Vortex, Teal Turbo, Green Galaxy, Yellow Spark and Blue Quest –zoomed around Daley Plaza as they competed for the STEM Cup. Families, friends and members of the public cheered on the STEM superstars as they crossed the finish line.
Orange Flare brought the heat and finished first. Teal Turbo followed close behind. Win or lose, all participants gained new skills, made lasting friendships and received scholarships for participating in the program.
The ComEd Icebox Derby engages, inspires and nurtures a passion for science, technology, engineering and math among young women in Chicagoland. It’s just one of many ways ComEd is taking the lead in helping to build the workforce of the future. To learn more visit iceboxderby.com.
