ComEd Graduates Veterans and Military Reservists from Energy Efficiency Training Program

Veterans Day 2025 marks a meaningful milestone for a group of military veterans and reservists who will graduate from ComEd’s Market Development Initiative (MDI), a workforce training program that prepares individuals for careers in the energy efficiency industry. For these veterans, the shift from military service to clean energy work represents more than a new professional path—it’s a continuation of their dedication to service, now focused on helping Illinois become more energy efficient and resilient.

“Veterans offer a distinct set of strengths to the energy efficiency workforce. Their discipline, adaptability, and technical skills align well with the demands of roles that require precision, problem-solving, and a strong sense of responsibility,” said Laticia Holbert, ComEd’s senior manager of workforce development. “Through MDI, participants become equipped to apply their experience in ways that directly benefit homes, businesses, and communities across the region. The training program also supports veterans’ transition to civilian life, providing skills and certifications that contribute to the growing energy efficiency workforce.”

Launched in early 2024, MDI provides five weeks of immersive training that blends classroom instruction with hands-on learning to individuals new to and experienced in the energy-efficiency industry—all at zero cost to participants. After studying building science principles, healthy housing standards, and practical techniques such as air sealing, insulation, and mold remediation, graduates earn industry-recognized certifications that qualify them for roles including energy auditor, retrofit installer, and building performance technician. These positions offer competitive pay and long-term career potential in a rapidly growing field.

To ensure participants can fully engage in the program, MDI includes a range of support services designed to remove common barriers to training. These services include stipends to offset lost income, weekly gas cards, childcare assistance, and accounting support for those looking to grow their businesses. By addressing these logistical challenges, the program allows individuals to focus on building their skills and preparing for future opportunities.

“Hearing stories from past MDI graduates and the success they have seen, it’s very heartwarming,” said Susan Buck, ComEd’s manager of energy efficiency programs and one of the coordinators of the MDI veterans cohort. “Many people come out of the MDI program very excited to be in the energy efficiency space because of everything that was introduced to them during the training. Now, we are helping these veterans adjust to civilian life by creating pathways to stable, meaningful jobs in energy efficiency including installers, weatherization, and HVAC.”

The foundation of MDI was shaped by a joint utility research effort that explored what was needed to create a strong and accessible clean energy workforce. Each utility developed its own version of the program, and ComEd’s approach stands out for its comprehensive structure and commitment to participant success. Since its launch in 2024, MDI has graduated over 130 professionals from more than a dozen different cohorts, each with a unique focus ranging from aspiring energy professionals to small business owners. The veteran cohort adds a new dimension to this growing initiative, and its graduation on Veterans Day highlights the significance of their journey.

As Illinois is expected to see as many as 150,000 new jobs in clean energy 2050, programs like MDI play a vital role in preparing the workforce to meet evolving industry needs.
