Enjoy the fireworks, outdoors and company of friends and family while saving on energy costs this Independence Day. Follow these tips for a fun, relaxing and money-saving holiday:

Spend the day outside. Spend some time on the patio and give your AC a break. Set your thermostat to a higher temperature when you’re out by the pool or attending your town’s parade. Not sure what temperature to set it at? When your home is unoccupied for eight or more hours, the setting should be increased by 7° F to 10°F. Speaking of AC, read how you can upgrade your heating and cooling systems to boost your energy efficiency and save with ComEd rebates.

Fire up the grill.  There’s nothing like a barbeque with friends and family to kick off the Fourth. Take advantage of your outdoor grill instead of using your stove or oven. You’ll use less energy, keep excess heat out of your home and enjoy a delicious dinner. Pro tip: Add salads, fruit or grilled corn on the cob to your holiday menu – these tasty side dishes don’t require a stove or oven.

Push back the clean-up time. Enjoy the fireworks, and then do the cleanup. Using large appliances such as ovens, dishwashers, washing machines and dryers during the hottest part of the day adds extra heat in your home that forces your air conditioner to work harder. Scheduling cleanup at night will save you money and is the perfect excuse to sit back and enjoy the day.
