Drive-thru COVID-19 testing sites are opening around the country. One testing site in Chicago is now open to first responders and health professionals with help from ComEd.

Years ago, Michael Mann, new business manager at ComEd, recommended the company purchase a mobile bridge that would allow crews to get across unleveled land to access equipment.

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) saw the bridge and heard about its capabilities while attending Operation Power Play, a statewide emergency drill organized by ComEd.

So, when they contacted ComEd to use its bridge to help create a drive-thru COVID-19 testing site, the answer was obvious.

“We have the equipment and the means to help during unprecedented times,” Mann said. “Illinoisans have been significantly impacted by this virus, and all employees are looking for ways to provide comfort to our customers.”

The recently installed bridge joins two properties together that were previously inaccessible. The bridge is helping move traffic from the roadway to an off-road holding area, allowing for efficient testing.

“Simply put, ComEd powers lives,” he said. “This is one example of how we support the communities we serve every day.”
