ComEd and IIT give a glimpse into the Future of Energy

David Alvarez, a ComEd engineer

David Alvarez, a ComEd engineer, gives you a peek at C-SMART.

The ComEd smart grid program that got underway in 2012 has helped to modernize the 100-year old energy delivery system that serves nearly 4 million customers in northern Illinois. The smart grid is already producing great results for customers including record-breaking power reliability and faster restoration when outages do occur. ComEd is now leveraging this smarter, more flexible grid to introduce new technology and services that are emerging from the Center for Smart Grid Application, Research, and Technology (C-SMART).

C-SMART is located on the campus of Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). C-SMART creates opportunities for ComEd to collaborate with IIT’s faculty and students as well as leading technology companies to develop and test new energy technology such as smart LED streetlights, electric vehicle charging stations and sensor-based smart city technologies.
